The start of a new year is also the time to try new things! Over the month of September, I will be holding a series of four sessions on how we plan and do worship a the Unitarian Church. Many of the worship associates will be a part of it, but it is also an opportunity to come see what goes one behind the scenes every week to prepare what the congregation sees on Sunday morning. If you’ve ever wondered about getting involved, or have an idea for a service you would like to lead, but do not want to commit to joining a new committee right now, this is a great opportunity to get a taste of worship planning.
Currently, the plan is to meet on four consecutive Tuesday nights: September 5, 6:00-8:00 PM Worship Planning 101: From blank page to service blurb. September 12, 5:30-6:30 PM (to accommodate the Board Meeting) Cultivating Worship: Structuring a worship service around a theme. September 19, 6:00-8:00 PM Putting It All Together: Writing an Order of Service, and working with music, religious education, and Audio Visual. September 26, 6:00-8:00 PM Practice: Trying out what we have been talking about for a month. I hope to see you there! Oscar Further details will be announced in upcoming Friday eblasts. If you haven't signed up yet, you may opt into our mailing list by using the button in the footer of this website. This is a good time to start. We have a new PC computer. We are now hard-wired, which means that the internet is more stable. We always have two people. Bob Fuson is present to help with troubleshooting issues. Individual training is available. This is a fun and challenging way to support worship.
Please contact Linda R. Brown, lindar1brown@gmail.com , if you would like to serve on the Audio-Visual Support Crew. Thursday, June 15 • 6:30PM • Horizons Community Church, 3200 Grainger Parkway
Everyone is invited to attend the community celebration to applaud what we’ve built together, even if you did not make it to the Nehemiah Action Assembly. This will be a family-friendly event with music, activities and games, updates on issue successes, awards for network members and faith communities, and refreshments. For planning purposes, please let us know that you will be attending at this LINK. You will not be turned away at the door if you did not sign up in advance. The power of 1,105 people was harnessed on May 4 at the Lancaster Event Center for Justice in Action’s Nehemiah Action Assembly. Ten percent of the attendance, 124 participants, were members and friends of our church. We is one of 20 founding faith communities of Justice in Action. Preliminary conversations started almost two years ago among a group of Lincoln/Lancaster County ministers, including Rev. Oscar Sinclair. Seven members of our congregation hosted listening sessions last October. Then they transitioned to be our Network Team Leaders, maintaining contact with members of our congregation and inviting them to Justice in Action rallies and the Nehemiah Action Assembly. The Unitarian Church of Lincoln (UCL) is represented on the Board by Judy Hart and Judy Kelly (with Marcia and Ray Cederdahl and Elle Straatmann serving as alternates). Judy Kelly and Judy Hart participated as members of the criminal justice (Judy Kelly) and mental health (Judy Hart) research teams in preparation for this year’s Nehemiah Action Assembly. Visit https://www.justice-in-action.org/ for the full 2023 Nehemiah Action Assembly to learn about the mental health and criminal justice reform issue reports and to sign up for the Justice in Action newsletter. The cycle of listening sessions, issue selection, and research, and a Nehemiah Action Assembly will be repeated annually by Justice in Action. Sunday July 23 • 5:30PM • Antelope Park Shelter
What do we have to celebrate? The 2022-2023 church year is ending, our Minister Oscar Sinclair is returning, and potlucks are always a fun way to share a meal! Join us in the air-conditioned shelter at Antelope Park (near the playground). Bring a dish to share and fill both your stomach and your soul. Good times! Congratulations to Denise Dickeson who was crowned our newest (no longer) Unsung Unitarian! Denise’s name will be added to the display to the right of the name tags and she will have a designated parking place for the next year.
NOMINATION FOR UNSUNG UNITARIAN 2023 Denise is the longest-standing Dazzler, a group of volunteer church office workers. She has staffed and continues to staff the Church Bookstore for many years, sorting, pricing and displaying books for purchase in our bookstore. Denise is the guardian and dedicated water bearer for the church fig tree in our Gallery Space. In addition, she cares for the Columbarium, located on the church grounds; she scrubs down the Columbarium several times a year. Denise is often “the woman in the office window” on Sunday mornings, answering questions, overseeing activities, problem solving, and directing traffic, as well as cleaning off the office window (and all of the doors) of the accumulation of fingerprints several times a month. Denise was born into Unitarian Universalism as both her parents were members of this church, even when The Unitarian Church of Lincoln building was located downtown! Denise herself joined, signing the book and pledging in 1972. My friend, Denise, is a friend to all and a good neighbor who bakes cookies for Little Free Pantries and gives rides to people to pick up fresh foods at Food Bank distribution sites. Just Mercy is a 2019 biographical legal drama that explores the work of young Harvard-educated defense attorney, Bryan Stevenson, who represents poor African-American people on death row in the South. It is based on the first story in Stevenson’s book with the same title. Just Mercy stars Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson and Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, who has been wrongfully convicted of the murder of a young woman. Actress Brie Larson plays Stevenson’s colleague in forming the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery. In response to the murder of George Floyd, Warner Bros. Pictures made the film free on various streaming platforms during June 2020 to educate the public about systemic racism. Foxx was nominated for an Oscar for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Both he and Michael B. Jordan won NAACP Image awards for their roles. The film is rated PG-13. We will have a discussion following the film for anyone who wishes to stay for that. Thursday, May 4 • 6:30PM (Doors open at 6:00PM) • Lancaster Event Center
On Thursday evening, May 4, more than a hundred members of the Unitarian Church of Lincoln will be joining with congregants of nineteen other Lancaster County faith communities to demonstrate the power of Justice in Action organized people. Two issues will be presented to elected officials, with proposals for specific action that will improve our Lancaster County community: • Criminal Justice Reform: to increase and achieve more equitable participation in diversion programs. • Mental Health: to conquer the maze of mental health resources for those in need. Even if you haven’t participated in any Justice in Action events in the past, you are invited and welcome to attend the Nehemiah Action Assembly. • If you have a ticket, bring it, but you will also be admitted without a ticket. • If you have a Unitarian Church of Lincoln T-shirt, please wear it to show our presence and to help us find each other.
