Rev. Oscar Sinclair began serving the Unitarian Church of Lincoln on August 1, 2017. Just under one year later in June 2018, after many months of planning, Oscar was ordained and installed in a wonderful ceremony held at First Plymouth United Church of Christ in Lincoln.
Oscar and his wife Stacie moved to Lincoln from New York where Oscar had served as a student minister at the Shelter Rock Unitarian Universalist congregation. Stacie is a social worker specializing in health care public policy. In 2017, Oscar said that they were " looking forward to buying a dog and a house with a porch" so they could be part of a neighborhood. It seems that their vision is being lived out. Oscar and Stacie added a human member of the family in December 2017 when Ailish was born. They added a canine member of the family in April 2020 when Teddy wriggled her way into their hearts.
A LITTLE MORE HISTORY
Oscar Sinclair grew up in East Lansing, Michigan and is a former community organizer who served in Lesotho in the Peace Corps. Within a year of completing his Peace Corps service, Oscar was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was a member of the Unitarian Church of Baltimore and he describes his call to ministry as an unexpected coming to the realization that he wished to “embrace faith and hope even in the face of all that the world throws at us: faith despite, or maybe because of, all evidence to the contrary. I applied to seminary from a hospital room.”
Oscar chose Wesley Theological Seminary (even though he is not a Methodist) in order to expand his ability to work in interfaith partnership across different denominations. He has done clinical pastoral training at a North Carolina children’s hospital and two years as the full-time student minister at Shelter Rock. One minister told us, “He’s wonderful. I know whoever scoops him up will be very lucky. You look at Oscar and you’re like “Yep, you’re the real deal.” The spark of God is with him, and I’m not even from a faith tradition that believes that. He’s hands down one of the best human beings I know.”
