Dear UU Parents and Guardians,

Chalice lighters needed!

Is your family willing to send in a video of you lighting a chalice (or a candle) to be used during our YouTube services?
If so - please send as an email attachment or as a link to a google file (make sure it's 'shareable') to me by December 31st at the latest.
The video will likely have words or music dubbed over it - so no need to say anything. Simply light the chalice and smile :)

It would be lovely if you could join us for our weekly gatherings!

Save the Dates! Stuffed Animal Sleepover!

While the church is empty, our stuffie friends will play! Adults and children alike are invited to bring a stuffed animal friend to the church and place in a
rubbermaid container outdoors.

Drop off stuffies December 19 and 20 from Noon to 5:00PM or December 21 from 5:30PM-7:30PM. PLEASE be sure
this is a friend you can be without for an extended period of time!

The animals will quarantine for 3 days before playing with one another.
Chelsea will record the entertainment that ensues over LPS Winter Break, and you will return to the church to pick up your friend and wash upon returning home
January 2 or 3 from Noon to 5:00PM or January 4 from 5:30PM-7:30PM.

All stuffed animals must register.

More details and registration form will arrive in this email next week.

Here is what is currently being offered:

NO SUNDAY SCHOOL THIS WEEK!

Please join us at 10am on YouTube for an ALL AGES service! There will be a story, an activity, and singing!
We will also have a Town Hall meeting after the service (overlapping with when we would typically have Sunday School).
Please check the daily e-blast for the links to these events or email Jean if you need the information: [email protected]

Dear UU Parents and Guardians,

Sunday School in a Bag may be arriving at your door sometime in the next week or so!

The theme for this bag is our 2nd principle. In words children can easily understand, this is simplified to: "Be Kind in All You Do"

The bags go out to those who registered their children in September and marked that they DID want the bags delivered to their door. If you missed that window, and have decided you would like to be a part of the deliveries, please let me know and I can be sure you include you for the next round of bags.
 Family Spotlight!
In an effort for us to remember seeing faces, and to get to know one another better, I am going to spotlight one family each month in our church newsletter. (SO easy. PLEASE sign up. I promise it will not take much time at all.)

Wrestle with the Call of ReparatioReparations: Some argue racial healing requires it; others declare it unrealistic. But no matter where one stands, all of us can at least admit that the refusal to make space for the discussion drives us even farther from healing.

Besides asking “Where do you stand?” maybe the equally important question is, “Why is America so afraid of the discussion?” Once you dive in, the answer is hard to miss: The reparations debate challenges us with hard questions: What does apology without accountability mean? How can personal reconciliation occur without structural repair? How much of our comfort are we will to sacrifice to heal others’ pain? Are you willing to look honestly at the casualties of your comfort and success? Can we disagree about the efficacy of reparations and still consider each other allies?

With these challenging questions in mind, this exercise invites you to explore the diverse articles below not simply with the question of “What’s my opinion?” but also “Where is my resistance coming from?” “What scares me about this topic?” and “How is the conversation itself trying to help me heal?”

What do these articles reveal to you?

  • The Case for Reparations, Ta-Nehisi Coates (related article)
  • The centuries-long fight for reparations
  • Blacks Deserve Reparations—But Not for Slavery, Jonathan Rauch
  • The Impossibility of Reparations, David Frum
  • Why I Changed My Mind On The Reparations Debate, Julie Wittes Schlack

Additional Resources for Parents With Deep Listening Theme:
Lectio Divina Lead You to HealingFrom the Soul Matters Team - Small Group Ministry
Like last month, we were invited to
engage our monthly theme by engaging an ancient Christian spiritual practice called lectio Divina, translated literally as “divine reading.” Learn more about it here and here. The basic idea is to deeply listen to a text by reading it multiple times, through a different reflective lens each time. You can also think of it as bringing different discernment questions to the text, with each question inviting you to listen to the text in a new way. Our favorite three questions are:

  • ●  What FEELINGS arise?
  • ●  What MEMORIES does it stir?
  • ●  What MESSAGE does it have for you personally? (“words of comfort or challenge”)

Here are three “healing texts” to choose from:
·       Even This Is
Enough, by Rev. Vanessa Southern

https://www.uua.org/worship/words/prayer/even-enough
·
Love After Love, by Derek Walcott

https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/love-after-love/

A Blessing For One Who Is Exhausted, by John O'Donohue

http://www.dailygood.org/story/734/a-blessing-for-one-who-is-exhausted/

Find the one that calls to you the most, then read it three times. With the first reading guided by the question: What FEELINGS arise as I listen to the words?” And the second reading guided by “What MEMORIES does it stir?” Ending with a third reading guided by “What MESSAGE does this have for me? What word of comfort or challenge is it trying to offer me?” (On this third reading it often helps to listen for which single word or phrase pops out at you, and then apply the question to that word/phrase.)
