Just Mercy is a 2019 biographical legal drama that explores the work of young Harvard-educated defense attorney, Bryan Stevenson, who represents poor African-American people on death row in the South. It is based on the first story in Stevenson’s book with the same title. Just Mercy stars Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson and Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, who has been wrongfully convicted of the murder of a young woman. Actress Brie Larson plays Stevenson’s colleague in forming the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery. In response to the murder of George Floyd, Warner Bros. Pictures made the film free on various streaming platforms during June 2020 to educate the public about systemic racism. Foxx was nominated for an Oscar for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Both he and Michael B. Jordan won NAACP Image awards for their roles. The film is rated PG-13. We will have a discussion following the film for anyone who wishes to stay for that.
